is not. they want to fight hard. mitt romney's adopted home state there, if you will. >> right, so he'll be doing that for sure in new hampshire and then in ohio today. okay, thank you very much, ron mott appreciate that. >>> let's get more on the president's surge in the polls. he is increasing his lead in a number of key swing states. he's leading in all nine nbc/"wall street journal"/marist polls taken over the last three weeks. let's talk about what's happening from the gop perspective. because some there are complaining about the polling. they say the pollsters are oversampling democrats. any legitimacy to any of these complaints? >> well, you know, alex one of the things that we often find is that the side that's complaining about polling or the media usually the side that's down. so, that's i think more of what's happening here, rather than the polls being skewed in some way. i mean, i think our pollsters, you know, we use a republican polling firm. we use with a democratic polling firm. they're, you know, have great reputations, and they try their best to match these numbers a
anything for granted. >> karen is exactly right, alex. let me just say. this the romney team went for, what three weeks, 3 1/2 weeks, never got to talk about what they wanted to talk about. some of that was self-inflicted, some wasn't. but from the time the hurricane was they thought was aiming at tampa they went a long time before they could got about -- they got a chance to talk about the economy. i think karen is exactly right. coming out of the debate i think there has to be a renewed effort on the part of the romney campaign to no matter what other forces are going on to stick with the economy and see if they can sell that. >> is there any thought that the romney camp, rich, takes a look at all these numbers and says any way you look at this election it's going to be historic, you're either going to re-elect a president who has higher unemployment numbers than any elected president in his -- re-elected president in history. or you're going to have a guy who gets elected who has very low likability and favorability ratings. i mean, is there anything to that that they're just sayings to
democrats. so i think it's fine. >> yeah. all right. well, curious, rich, do you think mitt romney is going to push these conspiracy theories or do you think it's too out there to touch? >> no. this is washington, d.c. we make $86,000 a year or whatever that number was. the last really good secret that has been kept in washington was the manhattan project. i mean, everybody from the lowliest intern on capitol hill to the secretary of state has got reporters on their speed dial on their cell phones. so for that to be the case you would have to have a conspiracy within the bls, bureau of labor staffs and hope that nobody talked. that's just not possible. >> according to the president's opponents, rich, when the job number is bad it's because he's a failure. when they're good it's because he's a fraud. i mean, how does this not make them look just petty? >> i don't know that everybody's saying that. two people they know of said it. look, i agree with karen. good news is good news. the way you deal with this is to turn it on its head. if the president had had a great debate performance and romn
